Cognitive processes become much faster during childhood and adolescence. The aim of my research is to understand why these changes occur and how they affect other aspects of cognitive change, such as growth in memory and reasoning.

John C. Cavanaugh and I have written a textbook on lifespan development, Human Development: A Lifespan View (6th ed.), which was published in 2012 by Wadsworth.

I have written a child development textbook, Children and Their Development (6th ed.), which was published in 2012 by Pearson.

I have written a brief guide to scientific writing, Scientific Writing for Psychology: Lessons in Clarity and Style, which was published in 2014 by SAGE.


Away from the office, I enjoy working out. Since 1977, I've run more than 15,000 miles, biked 58,000 miles, and swum more than 2,600 miles.
